Why We Give

How we spend our money says a lot about who we are and what we value. As Christ followers, our generosity flows from understanding that all we have is not ours to own, but has been entrusted to us by God for a purpose. Jesus did not shy away from teaching about a lifestyle of generosity. In fact, He spoke of money more than any other subject.

BIBLICAL GUIDELINES

Between you and God

Matthew 6:2-4
Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may  be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have  received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Done with a willing and cheerful heart

2 Corinthians 9:7
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Consistent and regular

1 Corinthians 16:1-2
Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.

Sacrificial and generous

2 Corinthians 9:6
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Directed primarily toward those who lead and feed you

1 Corinthians 9:11
If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?
